Grant Barnes, aka Grantimus Maximus, aka The Nerdcore Theologian. Currently, he is a PhD Candidate at the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley, California. He is a graduate of Perkins School of Theology with a Masters Degree in Divinity. He graduated from Texas State University Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in English, minor in History. He watches way too many movies, reads too many books, listens to too much music, and plays too many video games to ever join the mundane reality people claim is the "Real World." He rejects your reality, and replaces it with a vision of what could be, a better one, shaped by his love for God.

An Everlasting Dynasty, 2 Samuel 7:1-14a
Being a wanderer of sorts, being rooted in one place has always been sort of a fantasy for me. I’ve never stayed in one place for very long. The longest I’ve ever lived in one place was for six years. … Continue reading

An Embarrassing King, 2 Samuel 6:1-19
For most of my life, I’ve never been all that comfortable dancing. Sure, occasionally I would dance at the odd banquet or homecoming, or prom, or wedding, but dancing, though it is fun, is also an awkward enterprise for someone … Continue reading
A King is Crowned, 2 Samuel 5:1-10
(The following was delivered on July 5, 2015) It’s days like this when I want to give the people who came up with the lectionary a big hug, because what better day to talk about King David’s coronation than on … Continue reading

A Song for the Fallen, 2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27
The death of a king is no small event, even if that king was an imperfect first draft pick. But imperfect as he was, Saul was a tremendous milestone in the history of Israel, and one worth examining. As necessity … Continue reading

Proven in Battle, 1 Samuel 17:32-49
The story of David and Goliath is a touchstone passage in an at large cultural sense. What do I mean by that? I mean it is a story of a person, yes, but also the story of a culture. It’s … Continue reading
A Different King is Crowned, 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13
We’ve been reading this Summer in the books of Samuel, and the lives of 3 men: Samuel, Saul, and David. The purpose of this is to examine a particular phrase: A Man of God’s Heart. What does it mean? And … Continue reading
